During the final part of my art residency at Marchmont, after online requests for colourful work, I turned away from earthy burnt umber tones towards colour by way of mixing coloured powder stains into a royal porcelain clay body, then resurrecting the blends back into workable clay bodies. This allowed me to begin a process of extruding, the results, coloured sea-like creatures which you see pictured here.
The full ceramic series is titled ‘Colony’, and most likely inspired by years of coastline dog walks, Spittal beach being my most regular sea visit. Lowry’s favourite holiday destination in Berwick Upon Tweed. A weekly must do. Admittedly I never ventured into the sea itself or barely paddled.
Each of these pieces maintains its own character and can be related to actual corals and sea grasses. If ever visiting the borders of Scotland be certain to visit Cocklawburn, Sea Houses puffins boat trips, Bass Rock and Holy Island at Lindesfarne.
